The patent “Motorized ice cream
cone” (#5971829) is an amusing invention that automatically rotates ice cream
to allow for maximum enjoyment when eating an ice cream cone. The device
supports and rotates ice cream (or other food that can be placed on such a cone).
One of the key differences between this device and a normal, “low-tech” ice
cream cone is that there is no actual ice cream cone with this invention – the
user would simply put the ice cream scoop on the top of the device. The cup
that supports the ice cream scoop then rotates for the maximum satisfaction of
the user.
The device looks like the
following:
While I applaud the inventors of
this device for thoroughly reinventing the wheel on a very simple device, this
idea falls under the category “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” There is not
really a need to have an auto-rotating device for ice cream, as each person
would eat the ice cream at his or her own pace. There are also a number of
technical issues that would have to be resolved, such as leaks of the food into
the motor, potential weight limits of the food, etc. Also, the ice cream cone
is arguably the most fun part, and this invention would actually take away from
that!
I hope this invention was
intended to be part of a silly patent and that the authors of the patent were
trying to prove a point! I highly doubt that anyone would want to eat ice cream
out of such a device.

Hi Jay! I agree with you that this invention is pretty unnecessary, but I would actually be pretty interested in trying it out! I also feel like this invention is very novel and non-obvious. It would have been interesting to know if this device can actually be purchased/how much it costs!
