Summary of IEOR 190G

I had a great time in the IEOR 190G class learning all about patents and patent engineering. IEOR 190G was a very useful class that provided a solid introduction into the purpose and structure patents, patent engineering, corporate patent strategy, and other related topics.

One of the key areas where IEOR 190G has been beneficial to me is learning about the application of patent law to a variety of startups, large companies, and industries. Hearing from a number of guest speakers involved in diverse areas of the technology industry’s patent framework was a particularly interesting part of the course that very few students are exposed to during their time in college. From a course content perspective, I have learned much more about how patent law can be applied properly or improperly and successful patent strategies of companies (and how to replicate this in other ventures).

Most importantly, in my opinion, IEOR 190G has shown me how patent strategy, when used correctly, can be used not only to win lawsuits, but also to protect existing market share and prevent competitors from entering into a particular company’s market. As I grow and advance in my career, I am sure I will use these lessons in roles of leadership to help shape a company’s success.

In conclusion, I highly recommend other students to take this course when offered. I really enjoyed the class. Thanks!

  3. Hey Jay,

Awesome summary, I definitely can't agree more on the value of guest speakers in the course. I also like your analysis of the gains from patent strategy, and the benefits to both increasing market share and protecting it through intellectual property. Thanks!

  4. Hi Jay,

Great recap of the semester. I, too, learned a great deal about intellectual property, obviousness and applications of patents in the business world. It's interesting to see the perspective this class has given us when it comes to IP. Let's see how we apply this knowledge in the future. Thanks again!
